UK government policy
- National Occupational Standards
- The UK government is developing National Occupational Standards for care providers. A set of competence frameworks for the psychological therapies has been developed, which includes a competences framework for systemic psychological therapies.
- Within this there is a map of systemic competences, across five domains.
- The framework describes the knowledge and skills associated with the effective delivery of systemic psychotherapy.
- For researchers this framework can be used in lots of ways, eg. developing manualised approaches to clinical problems or their own manuals, or to define particular concepts they are researching - and what they might mean in practice.
- National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE)'s treatment guidelines
- NICE produces guidelines which influence which treatments and services will be funded by government and the NHS.
- It is therefore crucial for systemic psychotherapy research to contribute to NICE's psychotherapy guidelines, so its efficacy as a treatment is acknowledged.
- The Association of Family Therapy has published a summary of family interventions recommended and reviewed in NICE’s guidelines (updated January 2011). This summary contains recommendations for research on families or family treatments, and covers recent pilot research projects based on these recommendations.
- To find out more about calls for consultation on NICE guidelines and to contribute to these, visit the AFT website. We also need to make the case that empirical research other than RCTs (eg. process studies) should be taken into account by NICE
